Intel will invest $5 billion to significantly expand the company’s factory in Kiryat Gat, Israel’s Economy Ministry announced in a statement on Tuesday. Employment has improved dramatically in recent years and several companies, including Intel, HP, Visonic, Air Products, Tsabar salads, and Bonjour have offices in Kiryat Gat. In September, Intel bought an aging chip-making facility next to its Kiryat Gat plant from another U.S. company, Micron, reportedly with an eye to turning the facility and its 800-strong workforce into the foundation of a new plant. With Intel’s factory at Kiryat Gat employing about 3,000 people, that would mark a substantial increase in the company’s local workforce. Sunday's announcement lifted a major worry over Micron’s staff, whose members faced the prospect of being fired after the company informed them last December it planned to shutter the plant in 2014 after completing its backlog of orders.
