Xanadu Next is quite slow, even for 2005 standards, let alone 2016. Xanadu Next is a treat - a well crafted package that blends addictive combat, fun progression systems, pleasant exploration, great music & atmosphere along with a compelling story that doesn't get in the way. All roads lead eventually to the village, making adventuring and resupplying the resources effortless. Metacritic is worthless but even if it weren't, by cutting out any game with a lower user score, you're excising any game from the list that doesn't have a legion of fanboys backing it. Despite the obvious flaws in its plot, Tokyo Xanadu more than makes up for it with its fast-paced action and combat system. Gone are endlessly repeating towers of limited originality, and ushered in are exciting and atmospheric areas, some still in daunting castles or towers, whilst some also being outside. Tokyo Xanadu has a few quirks here and there, but I still had a fun time battling Greeds and bonding with my in-game friends. The game world consists of interconnected dungeons and mazes with Harlech village acting as a central hub.

In a year where gamers had F.E.A.R, Resident Evil 4, and Shadow of The Colossus, Xanadu Next’s opening feels dated in comparison. One of those games that can be appreciated regardless of how long it’s been around – Xanadu Next makes some brilliant use of videogame elements that we have all come to love, and although the player often lacks meaningful choice the game is never truly restrictive.
